Many hands appear to be good but are actually mediocre. A good starting hand depends on your position on the table, the number of players on the table, who you're playing against and much more. Always look for hands which can turn to good hands from many ways (suited, connected, 2 face cards etc).
Make sure don't risk too much of your balance on a single tournament or cash table, or else you may find yourself in over your head. As a thumb rule, you shouldn't sign up to a tournament or cash table with more than 5% of your current balance. Build your bankroll slowly, and you will find yourself playing the high stakes very soon!
One common mistake players make is constantly calling bets while waiting the board cards to improve their situation. Other players can take advantage of such play, and constantly bet since they know they are not in risk of a re-raise.
When playing a hand try to analyze your opponent's moves. After a showdown (when all players in the hand must reveal their cards), look at the hand history to read how your opponent played the hand. You can use this information in future hands with the same player.
